Real Overland Park has signed American attacking midfielder Abraham Lopez to a two-year contract, the club announced today.
A current member of the KCAFF USA squad, Lopez lead the team as captain to 4th place in the KCAFF World Cup, and proved to be a capable force on the field during the tournament. The team was originally not expected to advance out of the group-stage, with KCAFF giants Germany and Haiti projected to clean out the group, however his perseverance and leadership was a key motivator for the team as they fought tenaciously to come from behind and stun India and Haiti 3-2 and 5-4 respectively to finish second in the group behind Germany. Their momentum almost carried them into the final, yet were stopped by eventual winners Brazil 3-2 in overtime in the semifinals.
“I played with Abraham with the USA team in the World Cup. He was a consistent starter and well liked among teammates. As captain of the USA team he lead us to a fourth place finish and was a must have on our league team.“ - Real OP Co-Owner Colin Cooper
With Real OP, Lopez joins a talented midfield dynamo featuring Jason Durante, Nate Bliss, Victor Nichols, and Jason Stevenson. The club looks to start off the inaugural Select League season strong against Lee's Summit Athletic on April 6th (5:00 pm CT).
